US withdraws military from five bases in Afghanistan

Kabul: The United States has removed its military from five bases in Afghanistan. It is being said that the US bases are being closed, in accordance with the peace deal signed with the Taliban. But the United States has clarified that the counter-terrorism campaign will continue in Afghanistan. At the same time, the biggest US base at Bagram will continue to operate.

On 29th February, a peace deal was signed between the United States and Taliban. According to this deal, the United States will withdraw 8,600 soldiers from Afghanistan. Pentagon, the US military headquarters, announced the military withdrawal from five US bases in Afghanistan, on Tuesday. The closed US bases are located in Helmand, Oruzgan, Paktia, Laghman provinces.   

The US-Taliban peace deal has completed 135 days. The first stage of US military withdrawal has started as per the conditions of the agreement. Zalmay Khalilzad, a special envoy appointed by the United States for Afghanistan, said that NATO military deployment also would be reduced. Khalilzad added that henceforth, stress would be on the release of Taliban prisoners and trying to bring the Taliban and the Afghan government to the negotiation table to reduce violence in Afghanistan.   

Taliban has welcomed the US military withdrawal. But the Taliban is yet complaining about the airstrikes carried out by the US air force on Taliban locations. At the same time, the United States is pointing out that the Taliban has not stopped carrying out terror attacks. Only two days ago, 30 people were killed in the Taliban attack in Afghanistan.
