UK announces ban on Huawei

London: The British government has announced a ban on the Chinese company Huawei. This decision was taken in the meeting of the National Security Council, presided over by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. British Minister Oliver Down justified the ban on Huawei saying that in view of the sanctions imposed by the United States, the security of the network being built by the Huawei company cannot be ascertained, and therefore the ban becomes mandatory. The United States has welcomed this British decision to ban Huawei. At the same time, China, rejecting the possibility of a free trade agreement with the United Kingdom, threatened that it will have to rethink regarding the opportunities given to the British companies in China.

Only last week, National Cyber Security Centre of the intelligence agency GCHQ submitted a report to the British government. The British intelligence agency warned in the report that in view of the US sanctions, the security of the company’s products cannot be ascertained, even in the United Kingdom. Against this background, a meeting of the National Security Council was held under the leadership of Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday. It was decided in the meeting to ban Huawei, accepting the report submitted by the intelligence agency. British Minister Oliver Down gave the information regarding the decision in the parliament.

British Minister Down said that 5G technology will be a game changer in the United Kingdom. But for this, the security and the reliability of the infrastructure, which form the foundation of the technology, are very important. Therefore, the Huawei company is banned in consideration of the US sanctions, and the advice given by the British cyber experts in the implementation of 5G technology. No new Huawei equipment will be purchased from January 2021 and by the end of 2027, the entire 5G network in the United Kingdom will be free of Huawei products. At the same time, a new bill will be presented for the security of the entire telecommunication systems in the United Kingdom. In the beginning of this year, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had taken the decision to allow Huawei to participate in 5G implementation in the United Kingdom. US President Donald Trump and other US leaders had fired salvos of criticism at the decision of the British Prime Minister.

The British ban on Huawei is a major jolt for China and a sharp reaction has been received from China. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying accused that the United Kingdom has broken the promises given to China by banning Huawei on the basis of perceived threats which have no evidence and only to show solidarity with the United States. Chunying also warned that an appropriate decision will be taken in respect of safeguarding the interests of the British companies in China. Chinese spokesman Zhao Lijian warned that the United Kingdom should not have any hopes for a trade agreement with China. Lijian also threatened that henceforth, good atmosphere and right opportunities cannot be guaranteed for the British companies in China, clearly indicating that the British Companies will have to face the repercussions of the British decision regarding Huawei. The Chinese Ambassador in China also expressed deep regret saying that the Huawei decision will have long-term effects on the China-UK relations.

The United States has welcomed the British decision and President Trump reacted that countries have started realising that Huawei is a threat to national security. US National Security Advisor, Robert O’Brien, praised the British decision saying that the international community is beginning to concur that these companies, like Huawei, are puppets in the hands of the Chinese communist government and their policies are a threat to the national security. The British decision is the reflection of the same realisation. Before the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia had banned Huawei. At the same time, leading countries like France, Germany, Canada and India also have indicated to ban Huawei.

Currently, Chinese company Huawei is known as the leading company in the 5G sector. This company, having close links with the Chinese communist government and military, has started a massive campaign to spread 5G network in most of the leading countries of the world. But following the actions initiated by the leading countries, one after the other, indications are that the intentions of the Chinese communist government of dominating the technology sector seem to be biting the dust.
