US shutdown may extend into the new year

Third World War

Washington: The shutdown which has caused closure of nearly 25% of the US government undertakings is likely to intensify, and the indications are that it may even extend into the new year. Although US President Trump is stationed in Washington, given the intensity of the shutdown, many members of Congress have proceeded on their Christmas vacations, diminishing the possibility of resolving the issue to near zero. Meanwhile, the White House has indicated that President Trump may be willing for a compromise on the provision for funding of the Mexico Wall.

The country was faced with the shutdown as the US Congress rejected the proposal presented by President Trump for the provision of $5 billion for the Mexico Wall, last week. This is the second instance of shutdown in this year, and more than 800,000 employees are forced to stay home without pay. These majorly include employees from justice, internal security, national parks and tourism departments.

The January 2018 shutdown had been resolved in just 72 hours. But that will not be the case this time as the indications are that the Federal Spending Bill will have to wait till the new year for clearance. Most of the congressmen have apparently, left for their homes, constituencies or vacations. Therefore, a convening a congress session during the vacations has been ruled out. The economists and analysts have already started warning that if the shutdown is prolonged, the effects will be seen on the US people and in the economy. As per the economists, the consequences will not be limited only to the United States and will also be seen in the economies connected through trade to the US economy.

It has been revealed that US president Trump has decided to be stationed in capital Washington instead of travelling for Christmas. The sources said that this decision is to try and resolve the shutdown issue at the earliest. Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management and Budget at the White House said that President Trump might be willing to reduce the provision for the Mexico Wall to resolve the shutdown issue. Mulvaney clarified that the provision would be slated somewhere in the middle of President Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion and the $1.3 billion accepted by the Democrat party.
