The Chinese ruling Communist regime announced a lockdown in the city of Shanghai in the last week of March. But the lockdown has did not affect the situation and the number of cases is rising at record rates. Nearly 10,000 new cases are being reported from Shanghai every day. On Saturday, the number of cases reached 23,000. While the number of cases is increasing, complaints of foreign nationals, officials and employees, and the locals facing a shortage of food grain, medicines, and other life essentials are being received.

The United States has taken cognisance of the situation and has issued an advisory for its citizens to avoid travelling to Shanghai. The US State Department said that the Chinese agencies are imposing arbitrary sanctions under the pretext of the Zero COVID policy and that the sanctions may hit US citizens. The US diplomatic office in Shanghai also has been hit by the sanctions and US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns has raised this issue with the Chinese authorities.

At the same time, the US agencies have instructed the staffers from the diplomatic office that it is not essential for the functioning to leave the office. A strong reaction has been received from China over this US reaction expressing displeasure regarding the measures taken against COVID. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian warned ‘We strongly object to the baseless accusations levelled by the United States. We protest the US displeasure over the measures taken against the Coronavirus.’

Experts and analysts from various countries have criticised the Chinese Zero COVID Policy. International media also pointed out that this Chinese policy was a failure. But this is believed to be the first time that the Biden administration has come out in the open to criticise the Chinese policies. The reaction by the foreign ministry spokesman indicates that China has become highly restless with the US displeasure.

A few days ago, Chinese officials confessed that the preparations against the Coronavirus pandemic are not enough and the consequences are evident. Local entrepreneurs and ordinary citizens also had expressed displeasure that the measures against Coronavirus are a ‘Total Disaster’. But the Chinese ruling government tried to suppress this displeasure. But the issue has once again come on the anvil with the US statements, cornering the Chinese rulers.
