US challenges China’s illegal claims over South China Sea

Washington: – A US destroyer patrolled the international marine region, remaining within the international guidelines framework and proceeded further. The US navy trashed the Chinese navy’s claims that the Chinese warships chased away the US destroyer. At the same time, the US navy warned that the US destroyer’s patrolling, in this marine region, is a challenge to the illegal Chinese claims.

Two days ago, USS McCain, a destroyer from the seventh fleet of the US navy deployed in Japan, patrolled the South China Sea. China accused that the destroyer sailed through the marine region of the Spratly Islands. Global Times, the mouthpiece of the Chinese communist regime, accused that the US destroyer’s patrolling amounted to intrusion into the Chinese marine territory. The Chinese spokesperson criticised that the United States challenged Chinese sovereignty.

Global Times claimed that the Southern Theatre Command of the Chinese military drove the US destroyer out of its marine region by sending its destroyer and fighter jets. But the seventh fleet of the US navy has dismissed this Chinese claim. Lieutenant Joe Kelly, the Seventh fleet spokesman, said, ‘The US destroyer has not been driven away from any marine region. USS John McCain passed through the international waters under freedom of marine movement, abiding by international guidelines. This was a routine marine patrolling, and after finishing the task, the US destroyer successfully proceeded on its further voyage.’

Lieutenant Kelly lashed out at those making illegal claims in the South China Sea sector. The US official criticised, ‘The illegal Chinese claim, intruding into the marine regions of countries of the area, poses a threat to the marine and air movement in the South China Sea. Lieutenant Kelly asserted that China is illegally claiming these rights from the countries in the region and this US patrolling is against this illegal claim of Chinese ownership. Since the last few days, the Chinese and US destroyers’ activities are said to have intensified in the South China Sea region. A Chinese think tank had recently expressed concerns regarding the developments in the South China Sea. The Chinese think tank monitoring the South China Sea developments had claimed that a conflict between the United States and China could be triggered even before Joe Biden takes over as President of the United States.
