Former US President Donald Trump had adopted strong policies with regards to North Korea. Trump had met with the North Korean dictator and discussed negotiations over the nuclear program. Hence, at least for a year and a half, North Korea and stopped nuclear and missile tests.

Yet South Korean President Moon Jae-in was displeased with former US President Trump’s stance; last month, he expressed his resentment over it. President Moon Jae-in had expressed hope that President Biden, who succeeded Trump, will adopt a tough stance against North Korea.

However, the Biden administration has not assigned much significance to North Korea in its foreign policy. Last week, President Biden did mention the North Korean nuclear program in his speech to the US Congress but did not attach particular importance to it. The international media claim it has shattered the hopes of South Korea. Moreover, reports reveal North Korea has stepped up activities of its ballistic missiles. The news suggests North Korea is set to demonstrate its strength with the missiles and send a warning before the meeting of the South Korean President and his US counterpart.

Against the background, South Korean President Moon Jae-in has appealed to the Biden administration. ‘Now, the time for long deliberations is coming to an end. It is time to take action for South Korea for restoring peace in Korean Peninsula’, asserted South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Meanwhile, Moon Jae-in will be visiting the United States on 21 May. Before that, on Tuesday, a special meeting of intelligence chiefs of the United States, Japan, and South Korea will conclude in Tokyo. This meeting is said to be based on the Biden Administration’s policy regarding North Korea.

Earlier, North Korea had also threatened the United States with a nuclear attack. Nobody in the United States took this seriously. However, the South Koren President indicated that this threat could no longer be neglected as North Korea is infamous as a rogue nation. At the same time, the meeting between the intelligence heads of the United States, Japan and South Korea is a warning towards the situation in the Korean Peninsula becoming sensitive.
