Russia advises Iran to retreat from Syria as Israel intensifies its attacksLast month, army and air bases in Syria were attacked. The Syrian military and media have accused Israel of carrying out these air strikes using the airspace of Lebanon. The strikes in the cities of Hama and Hamdiya in Syria have evoked strong reactions from Syria, Iran, and Russia.

Moreover, Israeli media has claimed that the airstrikes in Hama were targeted at a terrorist group affiliated with Iran. This airstrike has caused a major setback for Iran. The targeted air base had a Russian air defence system and other weapons stock. The other targeted air base in Hamdiya is only a few kilometres away from the Russian air base. Hence, these airstrikes have gathered significant attention.

After this, Russia seems to have objected to Iran’s military bases in Syria, as Asharq al-Awsat reported as a news publication of Saudi Arabia based in London. Russia wants stability in Syria. Asharq al-Awsat, based on information from Syrian officials, has published that Russia has advised Iran to retreat from Syria as their presence was the reason for current attacks in Syria.

However, Iran’s Noor news agency has dismissed these claims published by Saudi’s Asharq al-Awsat newspaper. Iran’s news agency mentioned that there was no such demand from Russia and that the attacks in Syria were given undue importance. However, Israeli analysts claim that the airstrike by Israel is a challenge to the Assad regime and Russia’s air defence systems. Russia has warned Israel to stop attacks in Syria. However, Israel has informed Russia that the attacks in Syria on Iran-backed terrorist groups will continue as they pose a security threat to Israel. Israel has informed that if Russia wants the attacks to stop, they should intervene and ensure all activities of Iran-backed terrorists are stopped.
