QUAD meeting held in Delhi

New Delhi: India, Japan, Australia and the US, the member countries of the QUAD, hold a meeting in New Delhi alongside the G20 summit. There was unified support for an open and free Indo-Pacific region and the decision to form a working team against terrorism. China being aggrieved has criticized the QUAD meeting.

QUAD meeting held in DelhiJapanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi did not participate in the G20 meeting; however, he arrived in New Delhi only for the Quad meet. The joint statement after the Quad announced unified support for a free and open Indo-Pacific region upholding the independence, the rule of law, sovereignty and territorial integrity, efforts to settle disputes through mediation without threats of force, and freedom of maritime and air traffic in the Indo-Pacific region.

The joint statement from Quad announced that it is opposed to unilateral efforts to change the status quo. Although discreetly, this message targeted China for its aggressive activities in the Indo-Pacific region. As expected, China has reacted and criticized the QUAD meeting calling it a close group of countries which excludes many. China has also termed this QUAD meeting harmful for regional cooperation and development prospects.

In this meeting of the foreign ministers of the Quad, terrorism was strongly condemned without any exception. The Foreign Minister respecting the Quad has strongly condemned any financial or any other kind of support to terrorists and their associates who carry out attacks in other countries. It was recalled in this meeting that the citizens of all the Quad member countries had lost their lives in the 26/11 terrorist attack on Mumbai. The attack on the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot was also mentioned in this meeting.

Meanwhile, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong highlighted that considering the current challenges, India and its views are very important and strategic in this region. Hence, any Indo-Pacific strategy cannot be deemed to exclude India.
