NIDAN portal launched to stop narcotics tradeA few days ago, a conference was organized in Chandigarh on the topic of ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the ‘Narcotics Coordination Mechanism’ (NCORD) set up at this conference. ‘NIDAN’ is a part of this same campaign. The ‘NIDAN’ portal has been developed with inputs from ‘Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System-ICGS’ and ‘e-Prisons’ (a cloud-based application). It is planned to link this database with the Crime and Criminal Monitoring Network System and CCTNS.

The ‘ICGS’ mechanism in the ‘Nidan’ portal is part of the Supreme Court’s e-Committee. It is designed to facilitate seamless exchange of information between courts, police, prisons and forensic laboratories across the country. This portal provides information about criminals arrested for drug-related crimes and those who buy, sell, transport, store and use drugs. It will be the largest database of drug-related crimes. NCB Director General SN Pradhan believes that this will ensure success in bringing drug-trafficking-related crimes under control. At the same time, criminals involved in these crimes will have fewer escape routes and face harsher punishments.

The database will also contain information on those directly and indirectly, involved in the drug trade. Creation of this portal will significantly increase the capabilities of law enforcement agencies.
