Washington – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived on a tour of Latin America on Monday. On Monday, he met with Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. The US targeted Brazil during the Russian Foreign Minister’s visit. Senior US officials expressed strong displeasure over the statement made by the President of Brazil on the Ukraine issue.
Foreign Minister Lavrov will visit Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua during his Latin American tour. The tour started from Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, on Monday. Brazil has refrained from aiding Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and has supported Russia diplomatically. Brazil has consistently maintained that peace talks are necessary to resolve the conflict and, at the same time, refrained from criticising Russia’s attacks.
A few days ago, the President of Brazil, who visited China, openly criticised the US. President Lula da Silva warned that the US should avoid encouraging the Russia-Ukraine war further and focus on establishing peace. The Russian Foreign Minister upheld the role of President Silva. We are grateful to the Brazilian leadership for aptly understanding the current situation, said Lavrov as he appreciated Brazil’s stand.
In various meetings held in Brazil, Foreign Minister Lavrov mentioned the growing trade between Russia and Brazil. Bilateral trade between the two countries is said to have reached 10 billion dollars by 2022. At the same time, the Russian Foreign Minister also clarified that he fully supports Brazil’s position as a permanent member of the Security Council.
The increasing cooperation between Russia and Brazil has aggravated US’s uneasiness. This discomfort was reflected in the US response to the Brazilian President’s statement on the Ukraine issue. John Kirby, the US’s National Security Council spokesperson, sharply reacted and said Brazil was repeating the Russian and Chinese propaganda.
