12 more countries could be inducted in BRICS

Moscow: Strong moves are being made to expand BRICS, the association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed the possibility of nearly 12 more countries being inducted into BRICS. The Russian Foreign Minister said that these include countries like Algeria, Argentina and Iran. Against the background of the statement of the Russian Foreign Minister, media have reported that the African country Algeria has already applied for BRICS membership.

It is revealed that the importance of BRICS, formed with an initiative from India, Russia and China, has been increasing over the last few years. It is claimed that BRICS poses a challenge to a group like G-7 formed by the United States and European countries. Russia is making efforts on various levels to counter the sanctions imposed by the western countries due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The efforts to expand BRICS are considered part of the same efforts.

The Russian foreign ministry mentioned Argentina and Iran during the BRICS meeting held in July and informed that these countries were willing to join BRICS. The Russian leaders pointed out that BRICS could be an alternative for G-7. At the same time, it was clarified that western countries would not be allowed to join BRICS. Against this background, the statement of the Russian Foreign Minister attracts attention.

Foreign Minister Lavrov said that many countries internationally had expressed the desire to join BRICS. As of now, nearly 12 countries are preparing to join BRICS.’ He also claimed that many of these countries have even submitted official applications for the purpose. Per the information shared by the Russian media and sources, Algeria, Iran, and Argentina have applied for BRICS membership. The possibility of countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and Afghanistan joining BRICS has also been predicted.

Currently, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are members of BRICS and represent more than 40% of the global population. The economies of these countries account for nearly 25% of the global economy.
