Indus Waters TreatyIslamabad – Pakistan has claimed that India cannot violate the Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan unilaterally. Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman gave this warning to India. At the same time, Sherry Rehman also commented that India’s proposal to modify the agreement was unclear. But speaking in a debate on the issue in Pakistan’s Parliament, Rehman indirectly admitted that Pakistan was getting much more water under the Indus Waters Treaty.

On January 25, India notified Pakistan regarding the Indus Waters Treaty. India informed Pakistan that this agreement needs to be reviewed. India had said that the treaty was signed almost six decades ago and there was a need to change it with time. But India had warned that despite repeated demands for discussion in this regard, Pakistan is not ready to respond, so we can take a unilateral decision.

Moreover, Pakistan claimed it is ready to consider India’s concerns on the Indus Waters Treaty. Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman said India’s warning about the deal was serious while making a statement in Pakistan’s Parliament. Not only this, Rehman pointed out that this agreement remained intact even during the war between the two countries. But noting that India’s role is changing now, Rehman said that India could not unilaterally change the agreement; Pakistan has to be considered for that.

Furthermore, some MPs claimed that there had been aggressive changes in India’s policy towards Pakistan and that the current state of Pakistan is responsible for this. There is political instability in Pakistan and there is no unanimity between the political parties. India is all set to take advantage of this. That is why these MPs said during the Indus Waters Treaty discussion that Pakistan needs to look at India’s actions more seriously.
