The vaccines on the WHO list and the ones approved by the developed countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and European Union will be approved under this initiative. For this approval, 100 people will be administered the vaccine, and the effects will be observed. The expert committee will monitor the subjects for seven days. It is reported that after that, the vaccines will be cleared for administration in India. Therefore, more options will be available for vaccination in the country.

The fresh wave of Coronavirus has created havoc in the country. Maximising vaccination will be crucial in the control of the pandemic. Currently, Covishield and Covaxine are being administered to citizens above 45 years of age. The Indian vaccination program is the fastest in the world. 3.5 million doses are being administered per day. Until now, nearly 110 million doses have been administered. Out of these, 15 million have received even the second dose. Whereas more than 80 million citizens have received the first dose of the vaccine. But given the size of the Indian population and the extent of the vaccination drive, the vaccine’s availability in abundance is essential.

Against this background, the Russian Sputnik-V vaccine has been approved for emergency use in the country. On Monday, the expert committee of the CDSCO recommended approval of the Russian vaccine to the DCGI. Now even the DCGI has approved the vaccine. Therefore, the vaccine will be used in India. The target to manufacture 850 million doses per year has been set by DR Reddy’s Laboratories, the Indian partner in the Sputnik-V vaccine venture. India is the 60th country to approve the Sputnik-V vaccine.

Following the Sputnik-V, steps are being taken to approve some other foreign vaccines on a priority basis. National expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid 19 (NEGVAC) has recommended approval of the vaccines on the WHO list on a priority basis for emergency use. The decision has been taken to approve certain vaccines after the prescribed processes. Initially, 100 people will be administered the vaccine, and the vaccines will be approved for use in the vaccination campaign after observing the effects for seven days. These vaccines will be imported. Currently, six more vaccines are in India’s testing phase, and it is reported that these vaccines will be available for use by august.
