Europe must not take sides in Taiwan conflict – French President Emmanuel Macron advises

Paris – The Taiwan dispute is not a European issue. Therefore, Europe should refrain from getting involved in this debate; if it participates, there is a big danger for Europe. Therefore, French President Emmanuel Macron advised that European countries should not use their strategic autonomy to take sides with the United States or China in the Taiwan issue. French President Macron, who returned home after a three-day visit to China, suggested to a local newspaper that Europe should be impartial towards Taiwan.

‘The question we need to answer, as Europeans, is the following: is it in our interest to accelerate (a crisis) in Taiwan? No! The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the US agenda and a Chinese overreaction,’ French President Macron said.

While saying that Europe does not need to implement the US agenda, President Macron also raised the issue of stability in Taiwan. Stability in the Taiwan Strait is of utmost importance. Therefore, the attempt to change the status quo of this region by using military force will not be tolerated at all’, said the President of France, targeting China as well. President Macron turned the attention of European countries to Ukraine by saying, ‘We have not yet been able to solve the problem of Ukraine; how can we solve the problem of Taiwan?’

Even before this, the President of France had made statements that hurt Ukraine and the United States regarding the conflict in Ukraine. To prevent this conflict, the President of France met with the President of Russia, Putin and discussed it many times. At the same time, the President of France had indicated accepting an independent position regarding fuel cooperation with Russia. US President Joe Biden has opposed talks with Russia, while President Macron has claimed that talks with Russia are possible.

Meanwhile, Senator Marco Rubio of the Republican Party of the United States has expressed his displeasure with the position taken by the President of France. Rubio has pointed out that Macron’s logic is dangerous by asking whether the US should also abandon the support of the European Union in the Ukraine crisis. If Europe has the same role as the President of France, the United States should not take sides in the future. By saying that the United States should pay attention only to the possible threat to Taiwan, Rubio has warned that Europe should handle the problem of Ukraine.
