China upset over Quad meeting in India – says ‘Asian NATO’ will fail

Beijing: The Quad nations would continue to support the free and open Indo-Pacific region. It was announced at a Quad meeting held in New Delhi last week that the Quad would anyhow oppose the unilateral attempts to change the status quo that region. Upset by this, China has slammed the US. China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang criticized the US’s attempt to corner China by building an ‘Asian NATO’ of countries in the Indo-Pacific region that will fail. But while targeting the Quad meeting, China’s foreign minister carefully avoided discussing India or even raising such a question.

China upset over Quad meeting in India - says 'Asian NATO' will failLast week, a meeting of foreign ministers of G20 countries was held in New Delhi. Foreign ministers of the US, Russia, Japan, Australia, Britain and China also participated in this meeting. After this two-day meeting, the meeting of the Quad countries of India, the United States, Japan and Australia was also concluded. On this occasion, a joint statement was issued that the Quad countries uphold ‘independence, the rule of law, sovereignty and territorial integrity, efforts to settle disputes through mediation without threats of force, and freedom of maritime and air traffic in this area’.

Moreover, China’s hegemonic actions in the Indo-Pacific region were targeted in this joint statement by the Quad without being directly mentioned. At that time, China had expressed its displeasure over the meeting in limited words. But on Tuesday, China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang lashed out at the US while responding to the Quad meeting in his first press conference. China’s foreign minister accused the US of provoking countries in the region by raising the issue of free and open traffic in the Indo-Pacific region. Gang blamed the US is building an Asian NATO by bringing together the countries of the Indo-Pacific region like the NATO of the European countries. But China’s foreign minister claimed that the efforts launched by the US to corner China would not succeed.

In his first press conference, Qin Gang criticized all countries on the relationship with Russia and the US-Taiwan, European Union and Japan issues. Even while raising the issue of ASEAN countries, the Chinese foreign minister targeted the US. But in this full press conference, the Chinese foreign minister has avoided taking up the question about India for now.

Meanwhile, the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in India is claimed to have been a success. The Prime Minister of Japan is visiting India in the next few days. Japan is currently hosting the G7 meeting. The Prime Minister of Japan is likely to request India to participate in this meeting. The Prime Minister of Australia is also coming to India this week. Analysts claim that the visits of the prime ministers of Japan and Australia to India are disturbing to China.
