Weapons of mass destruction will fall in the hands of terrorists – India expresses concern in UN

United Nations: India has warned that new and emerging technologies may increase the risks of weapons of mass destruction access by terrorist groups and other non-state actors. This poses a severe threat to world peace and stability. A. Amarnath, India’s diplomatic official at the UN, underlined the threat while speaking before the Security Council committee. Amarnath cited the Coronavirus pandemic for this purpose.

Weapons of mass destruction will fall in the hands of terrorists - India expresses concern in UNA. Amarnath was speaking during the open discussion on the topic’ Proliferation of Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Weapons’ in front of the 1540 Committee of the UN Security Council. If nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction fall into the hands of terrorist organisations, it will endanger world peace and stability. The Indian diplomat warned that a similar threat is also posed if biological and chemical weapons and their delivery systems land in the hands of the terrorists.

A. Amarnath pointed out that the threat of simultaneous use of biological and chemical weapons had increased during the Coronavirus pandemic. Amarnath expressed confidence that the committee would be able to guide the member countries against this menace, saying that an open discussion against this menace is a welcome development.

In addition, the committee’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Commission and other UN organisations should be broadened. Amarnath claimed that this could lead to more effective efforts to ensure that weapons of mass destruction do not fall into the wrong hands.

Earlier, it was also revealed that terrorist organisations could build nuclear weapons in a short time and deploy them at strategic locations. This is a shocking matter and stopping these terrorist organisations has to be the highest priority. The Indian diplomat urged all member states to focus on this threat.

Though not directly mentioned, India is concerned that terrorist organisations could acquire weapons of mass destruction using a country like Pakistan, which openly advocates terrorism. India has expressed this concern time and again on the international level. India seems to have increased the pressure on Pakistan with an appeal to the international community without directly mention.
