The US to declare Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation

Washington: The United States has started preparations to declare the Revolutionary Guards, known as the Iranian military, as a terrorist organisation. The US media have reported this and have said that the announcement is expected in the next few days. The Iranian officials have threatened to retaliate by declaring the US defence forces as terrorist organisations if the United States went ahead with this move.

US President Donald Trump is consistently trying to pressurise Iran, since the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. Over the last year, the United States has imposed harsh sanctions on Iran, and the US National Security Advisor John Bolton recently claimed that the economic sanctions are being hugely successful. The United States has targeted the Iranian Crude, defence and nuclear sector with these sanctions. Directly declaring the Iranian military as a terrorist organisation, is considered to be an aggressive step.

The US media claimed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards would be declared as a terrorist organisation on the 8th of April. The media have said that sources in the US defence department have given this information. This decision is said to be a part of the harsh policies of President Trump regarding Iran. This will be the first instance of a national military being included in the terrorist organisations’ list, if the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, is declared a terrorist organisation.

The elections in Israel is also said to be a major factor, behind this announcement, by the Trump administration. Israeli Prime Minister is facing a stiff challenge in the elections, and the indications are that this election will be very difficult for the Prime Minister. As per analysts, against this background, if the United States declared the Iranian military as a terrorist organisation, it may benefit Prime Minister Netanyahu to a certain extent.

A severe reaction has been received from Iran over the US media reports. Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, the Chairman of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran, warned of a strong retaliation against the United States. Falahatpisheh warned that if the United States declared the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organisation, Iran too would include the US defence forces in the terrorist organisations’ list, along with the IS.

The Revolutionary Guards, known as the Iranian military, was established in 1979, following the Islamic revolution in Iran. The Revolutionary Guards has created many organisations like the Quds Force and many organisations in Syria and Lebanon and many other Gulf countries, receive support from the Revolutionary Guards. The involvement of the Revolutionary Guards in Iraq and Syria has already been exposed. It is being revealed that the Palestinian terrorist organisations and Hezbollah, also are receiving massive support from the Revolutionary Guards.
