This plan will be implemented under the leadership of the US Space Force. According to this, studies are being conducted for secured and less expensive alternatives for goods transport. The US air force announced the option of Rocket Cargo for this purpose. The air force clarified that the Star Ship Reusable rockets developed by the SpaceX company could be the best option.

A small agreement was signed with SpaceX and Exploration Architecture Corporation for this purpose. A proposal has been submitted to make a provision of USD 50 million in 2022, the US defence budget, for this project. Studies will be conducted to develop the capability of landing the reusable rocket at inaccessible locations and on unconventional surfaces, and airdropping the cargo at places where the reusable rocket cannot land.

The reusable rocket should have a capacity to carry 30 to 100 tonnes of cargo. Therefore, reusable rockets could help even in the deployment of US military personnel in the future. The US air force has set the target that the reusable rocket will carry a load equivalent to the C-17 heavy transport aircraft currently operational in the US air force, anywhere in the world, within an hour.

Dr Greg Spanjers, Chief of the Research Laboratory of the US air force, said that this was not the only company in the race. Dr Spanjers said that Blue Origin of Jeff Bezos, Leidos Dynetics and other companies also are competing.

The plan to use rockets for heavy military transport had been presented, even in the past. But the plan was dropped as the cost of launching the rocket was much higher than the military transport aircraft. But the air force started working on the project again after SpaceX successfully developed the reusable rockets.
