Bills introduced in US Congress to counter China

Washington/Beijing: – While the accusation of new US President Joe Biden and its administration taking a soft stand against China were being made, the edge of the anti-China action seems to be the same in the US Congress. On Wednesday, three bills and one resolution were presented against China in the US Congress. These bills target the South China Sea, trade and Chinese activities to increase its influence. At the same time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken castigated China over the issue of atrocities against the Uyghur community, and speaker Nancy Pelosi has raised the Tibet issue.

Former President Donald Trump had consistently taken an aggressive stand against China. The Trump administration had even taken actions against China over the issues of the South China Sea, Taiwan, Uyghurs, Tibet, 5G and espionage. But after Biden took over as the President, the edge of the actions seemed to be blunting. Biden, who was imposing successive sanctions against Russia, had adopted a non-committal stand against China. Biden had made controversial statements, supporting China in the issue of atrocities against the Uyghurs.

Against this background, the US Congress sent out a clear message that action against China is a priority, clearly indicating that the campaign started during the Trump administration against China will not lose its edge. Eight Senators of the Republican party presented a bill, Strategic Act, targeting the Chinese activities in the trade sector. This bill targets the intellectual property thefts and activities in the technology sector by China as well as the subsidies provided by the Chinese government to the Chinese companies.

Senior Republican Senator, Ted Cruise, presented a bill in the Senate opposing the Chinese activities to increase its influence in the US education sector and Chinese espionage activities. This bill, named Sheet Act, was also presented in the House of Representatives of the US Congress, and Republican party member Elise Stefanik took the initiative for this. Five US Senators presented a resolution praising the aggressive stand of the US Navy in the South China Sea. The resolution praises that a clear message has been delivered through the actions of the US Navy that the activities of the communist Chinese government will not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the US stand that the atrocities against the Uyghur community are nothing but genocide, during a hearing, in front of the Congressional Committee. Blinken assured that the United States would consistently raise its voice against this. Simultaneously, he posed a challenge to China, saying that if China does not have anything to hide on the Uyghurs issue, they should allow the world to view the situation. The US think tank published a detailed report blaming China for the Uyghur genocide only two days ago.

Speaker of House of Representatives of the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi, castigated China over the Tibet issue. Pelosi also levelled an accusation that the communist Chinese government is running a systematic campaign to erase Tibet’s culture and history for the last many decades. At the same time, Pelosi also warned that the United States would never stop targeting China over the Tibet issue.
