Ukraine acting vindictively against Indian students; Ukraine Ambassador justifies action

New Delhi/Kyiv: – The Indian students studying in the Ukrainian universities are preparing to leave the country following the Russian attack. Shocking reports have surfaced that some of these students were beaten up and tortured near the border by Ukrainian soldiers. This action by a country, which pleaded to India to use its influence with Russia to stop the attack, appeared inciting. The justification of the Ukraine Ambassador to India’s action has fuelled the Indian anger even more.

India maintained its neutral stand by refusing to vote against Russia on the resolution moved in the UN Security Council. It seems to be the Ukrainian reaction to that. More than 20,000 Indian students are pursuing medical and other education in Ukraine. Nearly 8,000 students have been brought back to India. But thousands of students are still stranded in Ukraine. Some of these are sent to Romania, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary and then sent to India. These students experienced the vengefulness of Ukraine when they reached the border.

These students were made to wait in queues for a long time. The staffers of the Indian embassy were providing food, water and shelter to these students. But the Ukrainian soldiers were not willing to allow these students to cross the border and avail the services. Moreover, the Ukrainian soldiers beat up the students questioning their actions. Some of the students were beaten up collectively by all the soldiers. Indian students reached this information to the media. After that, anger has grown in the Indian diaspora.

A few days ago, the Ukrainian Ambassador to India had pleaded with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to save his country from Russian aggression. As per the Ukrainian Ambassador, only a few countries can influence Russia and India is at the forefront. Therefore, he appealed that India should affect Russia and save Ukraine. But now, the Ukrainian Ambassador has avoided taking cognisance of the mauling and torture of the Indian students at the hands of the Ukrainian soldiers. Moreover, the ambassador said that action has been taken against offenders and the Indian media should not make a big issue out of this.

The real face of Ukraine has been exposed with this vindictive action against the Indian students and the justification. This country assuring the safety of Indian students is not willing to accept commitment even on the professional level. Assisting foreign students becomes the responsibility of Ukraine. Ukraine cannot avoid this responsibility even during war times. But the country is taking pleasure in acting vindictively against the Indian students instead of assisting them. This exposed the real face of Ukraine to the world.

Ukraine was at the forefront of the countries opposing Indian nuclear tests in the UN Security Council in 1998. Before that, Ukraine had taken a stand against India by supplying weapon systems to Pakistan. Ukraine had adopted a stand against India even on the Kashmir issue. All this is being reminded against the background of the vindictive actions against the Indian students.
