London: – The United Kingdom has announced an independent ‘Defence Space Strategy’ to counter the increasing threats in the space sector. Moreover, western countries have consistently targeted the activities of Russia and China in the space sector. The officers from the UK defence forces also have warned that the activities of Russia and China in space are posing a threat to the space businesses. While declaring the activation of the Space Command in the last year, the United Kingdom had also indicated that space weapons could be deployed and used.

Against this background, the UK defence department’s announcement of ‘Defence Space Strategy’ becomes important. The Defence Space Strategy informs about the plan as to what steps the defence department will take given the increasing threats in the space sector. A network of satellites for surveillance and to collect confidential information also will be built. A fund of more than $1 billion has been reserved for the ISTARI Program plan.

Moreover, a provision of $100 million has been made for the advanced Laser Communication Technology. A provision of $5 billion has already been made for providing Strategic communication technology to the UK Defence Forces and a system is being developed under the Skynet Program. UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace assured that the Defence Space Strategy and the investments under the scheme would play an important role in keeping the United Kingdom a step ahead of the competition.

China is developing the technology to target satellites. This includes missiles directly targeting satellites, Laser weapons, electronic jamming, and systems that collide with the satellites. In contrast, Russia has deployed satellites that could be used as weapons. Only last year, China and Russia announced the ambitious Moon Base plan. On the other hand, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany have announced independent space commands and NATO also has declared that space is the fifth war domain.
