A new bill has been presented in the British Parliament for reforms in the police department and strengthening internal security. The bill is named ‘Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill’. The bill was passed in the British parliament’s lower house, and deliberations over the bill are still pending in the upper house. The bill has a provision to award additional rights to the police. The clauses regarding rights against protests are facing massive opposition.

The British government is awarding rights to the police to take aggressive action against the protestors creating a chaotic situation, targeting important public places, including the Parliament. The bill also has a provision to award prison sentences from 3 months to 10 years to perpetrate violence and criminal acts during protests. It is said that the bill may also grant rights to the police to stop the protestors and search them if there is a possibility of violence.

Some groups in the United Kingdom accused that these rights awarded to the police are anti-democratic and targeting the protestors with vengefulness. These are the groups that held protests on Sunday in Bristol. Slogans and placards during the protests carried the message ‘Kill the Bill’. The protests, which started peacefully, turned violent in the evening.

One of the protestor groups targeted the deployed policemen, their vehicles, and even the police station. Sources informed that a minimum of 12 police vehicles were torched at this time. Strong skirmishes between police and the protestors have been reported and 20 policemen were injured. It has also been exposed that the police station was vandalised at this time.
