India & UK to develop advanced fighter jet engines

New Delhi: – Defence cooperation between India and the United Kingdom is reportedly scaling new heights. While the leading countries of the world are busy competing for an order for super-advanced fighter jets from India, the United Kingdom has made preparations to supply technology for the development of the engine for super-advanced fighter jets to India. An agreement to that effect is expected to be signed soon between the two countries. The Defence Logistics Agreement between the two countries is already in the final stages, and the Defence Training Agreement is at an advanced stage too.

During Aero India organised in 2018, the United Kingdom has presented an important proposal to India under the Make in India campaign. The United Kingdom had offered India an opportunity for joint development of the technology, necessary for the sixth-generation fighter jets. The technology can also be used in the super-advanced fifth-generation Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA), being developed by India.

Before embarking on the development of the AMCA, India held protracted discussions with Russia for the manufacture of fifth-generation fighter jets. The Indian government even announced a substantial investment for research and testing of this super-advanced fighter jet with a single engine, double seat and equipped with stealth technology. But for some reason, the cooperation could not progress, and India announced involving private companies in the manufacture of this fighter jet. Now, the United Kingdom has expressed willingness to supply sixth-generation technology for the fifth-generation fighter jet and also to work on the project jointly with India.

As per received information, India and the United Kingdom will sign the Defence Logistics Agreement in the next few days. The United Kingdom becomes the seventh country after the United States, France, Singapore, South Korea, Australia and Japan to sign the Defence Logistics Agreement with India. With this agreement, India will be able to use the British base at Djibouti. Therefore, everyone is expectantly waiting for the deal. India and the United Kingdom are already cooperating regarding engines for military vehicles, Howitzers, air defence systems, anti-landmine systems and hovercrafts. Moreover, the United Kingdom has expressed willingness to supply the drawings of the aircraft carrier from the Queen Elizabeth class to the Indian Navy.
