Global wheat stocks may last only 10 weeks, warns analyst

Washington/Moscow/Kyiv: Analyst Sara Menker warned that the global wheat stocks might not last beyond ten weeks. Menker pointed to this stark reality during a meeting of the UN Security Council. She also claimed that the world is facing a food shortage crisis for the first time since the 2008 recession. Although the Russia-Ukraine conflict is not the only reason for this, the conflict has added fuel to the burning fire.

Global wheat stocks may last only 10 weeks, warns analystThe prices of good grains skyrocketed since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Russia and Ukraine are known as the Bread’-Basket’ of the world. These countries are the leaders in producing wheat, legumes, corn and sunflower. 14% of the total global legumes export is from Russia and Ukraine. Agriculture in both countries is severely affected, given the ongoing conflict. The Russian exports have also been affected, given the sanctions imposed. At the same time, the agricultural land in Ukraine has suffered massive damage in the Russian attacks. At the same time, Ukrainian food grain exports have also been hampered as certain parts of the country are under Russian control.

Russia is the largest producer of wheat in the world. At the same time, Russia is also the largest exporter of wheat. But the sanctions have adversely affected the export of wheat and the fertilisers necessary for agriculture. Global wheat stocks may last only 10 weeks, warns analystTherefore, wheat has not been supplied to many countries in the required quantities and shortages have started developing in Asian and African countries.

Western countries have put the entire blame for the situation on Russia. But Russia has dismissed the accusations and has assured us that exports can be started if the situation is conducive. It has also been reported that discussions were held between Russia and Turkey regarding the matter. But the statements made by Menkar indicate that if the wheat exports do not start from Russia and Ukraine, the world could be faced with a severe food grain shortage crisis. Menkar is the Founder and CEO of the technology-related company Gro Intelligence.
