China outraged as US delists ETIM as a terrorist outfit

Washington/Beijing: The United States has removed the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) from the list of terrorist organisations. It informed that it was decided, as there are no credible proofs of the existence of the organisation. China expressed annoyance about the US decision and criticised that the United States has double standards, as regards to the terrorist organisations. Meanwhile, given the US decision, Chinese action against Uyghurs in the Xinjiang province may become a target of international criticism. Therefore, China seems to be upset with the US decision.

china-wang-wenbinTwo days ago, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, announced that the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) had been removed from the list of terrorist organisations. US Secretary of State had announced ‘No credible proof of the existence of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, claimed to be a terrorist organisation, by China, since the last decade, have been found. Therefore, ETIM is being removed from the list of terrorist organisations.’ In 2002, the United States included ETIM in the list of terrorist organisations. This action against the ETIM was to get China to support the war on terror started by the United States. But analysts claim that China has failed to produce credible proof against this organisation, in the last more than one decade. Therefore, the United States has removed ETIM from the list of terrorist organisations.

US-based Uyghur association has welcomed the US decision. The Uyghur association said that this decision was pending for a long period and this decimates the Chinese accusations. Whereas, China expressed strong annoyance over the US decision. Chinese foreign ministry criticised ‘ETIM is an international terrorist organisation and this organisation is a threat not only to China but the entire world. The United States should not have double standards in case of such an organisation. The United States should stop backing out from the international cooperation against terrorism.’ Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin accused that the United States is using the terrorist organisation for its benefits.

China has accused that the ETIM is spreading terrorism in the Xinjiang province of China. The human rights organisations are criticising China that it has initiated action against the Uyghurs and Turkish speaking people, alleging that this organisation is trying to create East Turkestan. It is claimed that the torture camps started by China are a glaring example of this. Therefore, the human rights agencies are claiming that the United States has delivered a significant blow to China by removing ETIM from the list of terrorist organisations.

The anti-terrorism stance of China, accusing the United States of double standards, has always been suspicious. Until now, China was the one who protected the Pakistan based terrorist organisations Jamat-Ul-Dawaa, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Hizbul Mujahidin that carried out terror attacks in India and caused bloodshed of innocent civilians. Besides, it has prevented actions by the UN Security Council against these terrorist organisations, forwarding technical reasons. Despite India’s appeal, China had decided to rock the Indian security, using its Veto right.
