Chinese Foreign Minister holds talks with Taliban

Beijing – China, which is preparing to invest heavily in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of the United States, held talks with senior Taliban leaders on Wednesday. China believes the Taliban will play a key role in the peace process in Afghanistan. The Taliban has assured China that it will not allow the use of Afghan land for anti-China activities.

China, Taliban, Wang YiThe United Nations had warned two days ago that the Turkestan Islamic Movement-TIM, a terrorist group seeking the independence of Chinese Xinjiang and the formation of eastern Turkey, is based in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush and Pakistan. In its latest report, the United Nations had warned that the TIM posed a threat to Chinese security. The senior Taliban leader is expected to visit China on Wednesday to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

During the discussions with the Chinese Foreign Minister, Mullah Baradar, the Taliban’s second-in-command, assured the Taliban would not allow Afghanistan to be used against China. He also mentioned that China is a trusted friend. But the Taliban leader refrained from mentioning TIM.
