In the last week, Australia demanded an independent and impartial inquiry into the origin and spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. Australia had appealed to all the members of the World Health Organisation to support this demand. But China seems to have been infuriated with the Australian demand.

Before Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom had made a similar demand. Australia only seems to have endorsed their demand. An intense reaction was expected from China, on Australia joining the bandwagon of countries opposing it.

Chinese Foreign Ministry has expressed intense displeasure over the Australian demand. The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman reacted that China was the first country to give information regarding Coronavirus. The Chinese foreign ministry also warned that some countries are taking a very insistent stand for the inquiry, but their political aspirations behind the demand will never be successful.

At the same time, Jingye Cheng, the Chinese Ambassador to Australia, threatened of an economic boycott. Jingye Cheng threatened a boycott on Australian products and tourism saying ‘Chinese people may ask whether to buy Australian products. The Chinese tourists visiting Australia also may think of alternatives.’

Earlier, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has taken some courageous decisions to reduce the Chinese influence in the country. Australia has also adopted an aggressive stand against the Chinese arrogance in the Indio-Pacific sector. The relations between the countries have already been placed on tenterhooks because of these developments. China had also warned Australia of dire consequences.

Against this background, Australia seems to have increased the pressure on China, making a demand for an independent and impartial inquiry into the origin and spread of Coronavirus. China has retaliated against Australia with the threat of an economic boycott. But the Australian Foreign Minister defied the Chinese pressure in harsh words. This matter underlines the Australian preparedness to clash with China.
