US could deny GPS to Russia: chief of Russian space institute, Dmitry Rogozin

Moscow/Washington: – The United States and European countries have imposed stringent sanctions against Russia, which has attacked Ukraine. These countries have decided to withdraw from cooperation with Russia in all sectors. Dmitry Rogozin, the chief of the Russian space institute, claimed that as the next step of these sanctions, the United States could deny access to the ‘GPS Satellite Navigation’. The United States can try and affect the campaign of the Russian military in Ukraine with this. Rogozin clarified that the Russian population should not fear such action as Russia can use its indigenously developed GLONASS satellite navigation system.

On Friday, Russian spacecraft Soyuz MS-21 was launched from the Baikonur space station in Kazakhstan. Three Cosmonauts reached the International Space Station after three hours. This is the first time since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict that a spacecraft has visited the International Space Station. Four American, two Russian and German astronauts, are already present at the Space Station.

A possibility that repercussions of the stand taken by the United States and the other western countries over the Russia-Ukraine conflict will be felt even in the cooperation in space. US President Joe Biden had warned that efforts would be made to finish the Russian space capabilities. The United States and European countries had withdrawn from any future cooperation in the space sector. Therefore, concerns are being expressed over the return of the US and German astronauts from the Space station. NASA, the US space agency, is claiming that the three-week conflict will not affect the cooperation in the space sector. But the US analysts had claimed that the warning issued by President Biden is severe. Reports of even the European countries thinking of the option have been published. Whereas the name of the first-ever space traveller, Yuri Gagarin, has been removed by the Space Foundation Censors. Gagarin was the First Russian Cosmonaut.

In this scenario, Dmitry Rogozin, chief of the Russian space institute, warned the Russian population regarding the looming threat. Rogozin reassured that there was nothing to panic about even if the United States denied access to GPS Satellite Navigation. The United States can convince the world that this action is justified under the purview of sanctions. Rogozin suggested that the Russian population use the Russian GLONASS Satellite navigation System instead.
