South Korea has been officially inducted into the Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) of NATO, located in Estonia. The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) revealed this information regarding South Korean inclusion. South Korean NIA expressed hope ‘Cyberattacks are not only threatening the security of one individual or country but also of other countries. In this scenario, the inclusion of South Korea in the NATO cyber security group will enhance the level of cyber security on the global level.’ CCDCOE was set up after the devastating cyberattacks carried out by Russia on Estonia. The organisation’s main objective is to stop cyberattacks on NATO member countries. The number of members in the CCDCOE has reached 32 with the inclusion of South Korea. Western media point out that the South Korean inclusion in the security group coincides with the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Minister Liz Truss had indicated this NATO expansion in the last week itself. Truss had suggested that the countries from the Indo-Pacific should be included in this military organisation currently limited only to the United States, Great Britain and European countries. The British Foreign Minister had suggested that along with QUAD members Japan and Australia, ASEAN member countries from South-East Asia also should be included in NATO.

Some European news channels have criticised an attempt to globalise NATO through this. If this happens, NATO, which was formed for the security of Europe, will spread to the world and will increase the challenges. The European news channels warned that the inclusion of ASEAN countries in NATO would create an open enmity with China. But the inclusion of South Korea in the NATO security group is a part of the US-NATO strategy. A few days ago, reports had been received that the United States had prepared to teach India a lesson for not adopting an anti-Russia stand in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The United States has prepared to replace India with South Korea in QUAD, the organisation formed to counter China. A South Korean newspaper carried this report. Against this background, the inclusion of South Korea in the NATO cyber security group becomes significant.
