Russian threat of nuclear attack cannot be ignored: CIA Chief -

Moscow/ Washington: CIA chief has issued a warning against a nuclear threat from Russia due to the setback in the ongoing Russia- Ukraine conflict. In the last 24 hours, the Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev has announced deploying an additional nuclear arsenal in the Baltic region. Since then, CIA chief William Burns has warned of the possible threat of nuclear attack. Burns also stated that President Biden and the US administration have been working to prevent a third world war.

Moreover, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other senior Russian leaders and officials have repeatedly warned of a nuclear attack. Since launching military action in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin has twice signalled a nuclear attack, raising concerns in Western countries, including Ukraine. With the recent comment from the CIA chief, this issue seems to have resurfaced again.

‘Russia has seen setbacks in their operation in Ukraine, which has frustrated the Russian president and other leaders. Under these circumstances, the Russian leadership can use nuclear weapons. Hence this threat cannot be taken lightly,’ said CIA Director William Burns. He also claimed that the United States was concerned about Russia’s nuclear forces being kept on alert mode. Burns also said that the Biden administration was working to prevent third world war and a nuclear attack.

Meanwhile, in the wake of Russia’s growing threat, NATO is preparing its nuclear countermeasure plans for Europe. Under this, nuclear bombs will be deployed on US F-35 fighter jets belonging to NATO member countries. Currently, European countries like Norway, Denmark, and Poland have F-35s. Germany has also announced plans to take F-35s. Currently, the US nuclear weapons are deployed at bases in five European countries, including Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey.
