Washington: After a sustained denial for three months, the United States finally confessed to its biolabs in Ukraine. The US defence headquarters Pentagon has said that the United States has been operating 46 biolabs in Ukraine for the last 20 years. Pentagon claimed that these biolabs are being used for peaceful civilian health plans. The Pentagon has refuted the Russian claim that these biolabs were being used for manufacturing bioweapons.
Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine on the 24th of February. Thereafter, the United States destroyed all the documentation in these biolabs. The United States attempted to destroy all the evidence of the manufacture of bioweapons from these biolabs. Russia had claimed that it had found certain documents in these biolabs. The Russian defence ministry accused that research on plague, Anthrax, Cholera, Tularemia and certain other poisonous viruses were being carried out in these biolabs.
It was criticised that Victoria Nuland, Under Secretary of State of the United States, could not give satisfactory answers during a hearing in front of the US Senate. After that, the US Senate inquired with the Pentagon regarding the biolabs in Ukraine and their funding. Pentagon had consistently refuted the Russian allegations in this respect since the start of the Ukraine war. But the Pentagon confessed to the presence of biolabs in Ukraine in its report ‘Fact Sheet on WMD Reduction Efforts’.
Pentagon claimed, ‘There are 46 US-funded biolabs, health facilities and diagnostic sites in Ukraine since the last 20 years. These biolabs facilitate biosecurity of Ukraine and monitoring of diseases in humans and animals.’ Pentagon informed that the focus of these biolabs is on improving civilian health and security in the agriculture sector. Pentagon has said in its report that the labs work in collaboration with the World Health Organisation.
Meanwhile, the United States invested more than USD 220 million in these biolabs between 2005 and 2022. The Russian inquiry committee had accused that the western pharmaceutical companies and the ruling Democrat party were involved in these biolabs. The Russian foreign ministry said they did not need to explain that 30 biolabs in Ukraine were being used for peaceful and scientific purposes. They asked why these biolabs started in such close vicinity to Russia and why the United States funded them?
Russia has accused that not only Ukraine but the US-funded biolabs are present even in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, the countries which came into being after the disintegration of the USSR.
