Over 105 killed in the conflict at Darfur in Sudan

Darfur: – Over 150 people have been killed and hundreds injured in ethnic clashes in Sudan’s West Darfur province. According to local groups, violence erupted in Kreinik, Jebel Moon Mountains and Serba in West Darfur. The new violence has displaced more than 10,000 people in the region. The Sudan government was forced to impose an emergency following the ethnic conflict that erupted at the beginning of this year.

Last month, clashes erupted between Arab groups in the Jebel Moon area. Its repercussions are beginning to spill over into other areas. A few days ago, a major clash broke out between two rival ethnic groups in the Kreinik area. According to the West Darfur Doctors’ Committee, as many as 90 people were killed and more than 100 injured in the violence. Eight people have been killed and six others injured in clashes across the country. Many of the injured are in critical condition and the death toll is expected to rise.

It is claimed that the incidents of ethnic conflict and violence in Darfur this year are similar to the conflict that erupted in 2003. Native Africans and Arabs clashed in 2003 over water, agriculture, and land. At that time, Sudan was ruled by dictator Omar Bashir. Bashir had started the genocide of Africans by supporting Arab groups.

The United Nations had deployed peacekeepers in 2007 to prevent violence in Darfur. But even after that, there was no significant difference in the violence. On the contrary, there were incidents of attacks on the peacekeeping forces. This fierce struggle has been going on for almost 15 years. More than 300,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million have been displaced. The period of deployment of the peacekeeping force in the Darfur area expired at the end of last year and the Sudanese army has now been deployed in the area.

In Sudan, the military overthrew Bashir last year and seized power. After that, the process of political handover has started in the country. Twice during this process, there have been military coups. At the same time, border disputes with neighbouring Ethiopia are on the rise. Against this backdrop, new violence in Darfur could lead to further instability in Sudan, as per analysts.
