– A second incident in 48 hours
Washington: Seven people were killed in a random shooting near San Francisco in California, US. The firing incident occurred on two farms run by companies producing mushrooms. Zhao Chunli, a citizen of Chinese origin, was arrested after the incident on Monday afternoon. This marks the second mass shooting in California within 48 hours. The fact that in both incidents, the assailants were of Asian origin and were senior citizens becomes significant.
Two farms in what is known as the Half Moon Bay region in California were fired upon on Monday afternoon. The attacker, Zhao Chunli, is said to be a former employee of one of the farms whose weapons were seized by the security forces. Besides, seven people were killed and one injured during the attack on both farms. All the victims of the attack have been revealed to be associates of Zhao. An old dispute at the workplace is said to be the reason behind the attack.
Moreover, this has been the second incident in the province of California in 48 hours. On Saturday night, an indiscriminate shooting occurred in Monterey Park near Los Angeles during a Chinese New Year event. 
In this incident, 11 people died, including the attacker. The attacker, Huu Can Tran, is a 72-year-old citizen of Asian descent, said security officials. But the aim behind this attack has not yet been clarified.
These back-to-back incidents of ‘mass shootings’ in California have brought the issue of ‘Gun violence’ in the US again into the limelight. Within the first 23 days of 2023, 38 mass shooting incidents have occurred in the US. Last year the same figure was 25. 
Besides, three of the 38 events have come up in California in seven days. Therefore, the law and order issue has also been raised along with’ Gun Violence’.
The website Gun Violence Archive reported about 650 incidents of mass shootings in the United States in 2022. In these incidents, 673 people lost their lives, and 2,700 people were injured. Since 2020 for three consecutive years, more than 600 mass shooting incidents have been reported in the US each year. According to various reports, factors such as political polarisation, downfall in economic conditions, inadequate personnel in the police force, substance abuse, weaker laws, and increasing cases of mental illness are the reasons behind these incidents in the US.
