Jordan’s warning: US embassy shift to Jerusalem would serve as a ‘gift’ to terrorists

Amman/Washington: The Jordanian Government has warned that if the new US government moves its embassy to Jerusalem, the Arab-Islamic populace would take to the street to protest against it and would create favorable conditions for terrorists to carry out new acts of terrorism in the Middle-East. The US Secretary of State, John Kerry expressed his concern over the situation by saying that if the US President-elect Donald Trump made this decision, it would lead to an absolute explosion in the Middle-East.

Embassies of the US and other western countries are located at Tel Aviv in Israel. Due to the ongoing dispute between Israel and Palestine over Jerusalem, friendly western nations had located their respective embassies away from the city. However, only a month ago Donald Trump’s advisor Kellyanne Conway declared to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem soon. Conway clarified that the decision on the US embassy in Jeruselum would be included in the priority decisions to be taken once Trump takes power.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has welcomed Trump’s decision. While, Egypt has vouched to back Israel on this decision. However, the current US government and its middle eastern allies  are opposed to this decision. Mohammad Momani, Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs has warned Trump Administration against this decision. He said that moving the US embassy to Jerusalem would mean crossing the ‘red line’. Momani warned that repercussions of this controversial US decision would  be caused on multiple levels which may ruin the situation in the Middle-East.

The US Secretary of State, John Kerry in an interview with a news channel warned that the repercussions of this decision would not just be limited to the West bank and Jerusalem but would lead to be explosive for the entire Middle-East. The Secretary of State, Kerry also made a reminder about “Jerusalem” being a holy place for the Middle-East and hence, the decision to move the US embassy here could raise an issue over its sovereignty. Jordan being a country that has been supporting Israel up until now may now be in its opposition.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Jerusalem has claimed that there already exists an US embassy building in ‘Arnona’ city which is close to Jerusalem.
