Japan and Indonesia to increase naval cooperation

Tokyo: Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited Japan on Wednesday and met Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The two countries discussed naval cooperation. Besides, the Japanese army will participate in Indonesia’s ‘Garuda Shield’ exercise for the first time next month.

Japan and Indonesia to increase naval cooperationMoreover, there is a need to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime power to maintain peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region. Prime Minister Kishida announced that Japan would assist the Indonesian Navy in this regard. At the same time, the Prime Minister of Japan announced a loan of $320 million to Indonesia for infrastructure and disaster management. Indonesia had earlier complained that China was encroaching on its maritime boundaries in the South China Sea region.

Meanwhile, the G-20 summit is scheduled to be held in Indonesia in November. Indonesian President Joko Widodo is visiting the United States, China and Japan to ensure participation of the G-20 member countries in the summit.
