Tehran/Riyadh: Iran has suspended the ongoing talks with Saudi with immediate effect. It has not specified any reason for this unilateral action. But a few hours ago, Saudi executed 81 convicts under charges of terrorism. These included Iran affiliated rebels from Yemen. It is claimed that Iran suspended the talks, infuriated by the Saudi action. Two days ago, Saudi Arabian agencies implemented a death sentence for 81 people convicted under the charges of involvement in terrorist activities. This has become a significant event in the Saudi history of the last few decades that so many executions were carried out in one day. These included members from terrorist organisations Al Qaeda, IS, and Iran-affiliated terrorist organisations from Yemen and Syria.

More than a dozen executions have been carried out in a single day in Saudi, even in the past. In 2020, 27 people and last year 67 people were executed in Saudi. But with the execution of 81 people in one day, the issue of human rights in Saudi has once again come on the anvil. There was criticism even from the Iranian media as the executed people included members of the Iran affiliated groups from Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

Iran suspended the talks with Saudi in the next few hours. On Sunday, the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), directly controlled by Iranian supreme religious leader Ayatollah Khamenei announced the suspension of the talks. SNSC announced that Iran is suspending the talks temporarily. Iran did not reveal the reason behind the decision. Four rounds of direct talks have been held between Saudi and Iran with Iraqi mediation. Last week, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman mentioned the direct talks between Saudi and Iran during an interview with a US periodical. Crown Prince Mohammed had said that these talks were necessary to improve relations between the two Gulf neighbours. Iran also had responded to this. But now, Iran has given indications of aggressive tactics against Saudi with the suspension of these talks.
