India objects to China’s new border laws

New Delhi – China has decided to give special powers to the Chinese military for border action against threats to its sovereignty and integrity. The decision by China against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between India and China over the LAC appears to be aimed at India. India has taken serious cognisance of the matter. China’s unilateral decision could affect the country’s bilateral agreements with India, India’s foreign ministry has warned.

China, Chinese army, LAC, India, Chinese Military,China had announced that its military would be awarded this special right from January 1, 2022. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs objected to the decision. This unilateral decision will adversely affect bilateral agreements with India. The decision is inconsistent with border management with China and efforts of the two countries to maintain peace and harmony on the border, said foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi. Bagchi said that India has also noted that the law empowers the Chinese military to restructure border provinces. Pointing out that China has not resolved the border dispute with India, Arindam Bagchi hinted that the provision in this Chinese law could lead to increased tensions between the two countries.

The foreign ministry spokesman suggested that India expects China to realise the destructive consequences of taking action under the law. Considering the border with India, it will be clear that China’s law is not valid, Bagchi added. Meanwhile, the 13th round of talks between the two countries’ military officials was recently held to reduce tensions over the LAC in Ladakh. The talks failed and China later complained that India was making unreasonable demands. India had blamed China for rejecting the Indian military’s proposals to reduce tensions.

After the 13th round of talks failed, China intensified its activities on the LAC. China is trying to divert the Indian Army’s attention from the LAC in Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh. The Chinese Army had attempted to infiltrate the LAC in Arunachal Pradesh. China is preparing to increase pressure on India with massive military deployments in the region. General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Defence Staff of India, clarified that the Indian Army has taken cognisance of this action and necessary steps are being taken against it.
