Auckland: India is ready to do everything possible to resolve the Ukraine problem. Earlier, India was requested to exert pressure on Russia to protect the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed that India had accordingly put pressure on Russia by raising the safety issue of this nuclear project. Jaishankar further said that other countries and the United Nations had expressed their concerns to India regarding the conflict in Ukraine. India is responding to them and is trying to resolve these issues in its way. Two days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Against this background, the importance of the statements made by External Affairs Minister Jaishankar increases further.

Speaking in Auckland, New Zealand, Jaishankar shared important information on Ukraine. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, different countries are working to safeguard their interests. These countries are presenting their positions in this regard. India is also making its statement keeping in mind its national and international interests. In such a situation, on the occasion of the UN General Assembly, some countries conveyed their concerns regarding the conflict in Ukraine to India. At this time, Jaishankar made an eye-catching statement that the United Nations, too had raised the concerns in this regard before India and India responded to it.

Moreover, Zaporizhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, located on Ukrainian territory. Zaporizhia was taken over by the Russian army, after which the conflict between the Ukrainian and Russian troops started in the area of the concerned project. Russia accused the Ukrainian army of firing rockets and missiles at the nuclear project. At the same time, Ukraine and western countries had alleged that there was a threat to the said nuclear project from Russia. Against this backdrop, the United Nations demanded that India put pressure on Russia regarding the safety of the nuclear power plant at Zaporizhia. Accordingly, India raised this issue during the discussion with Russia and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar indicated that India used its influence on Russia.

Two days before External Affairs Minister Jaishankar made these claims, the Indian Prime Minister had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Zelensky. In this discussion, Prime Minister Modi reminded that conflict would not solve the problem of Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi proposed to the President of Ukraine that the problem of Ukraine will be solved only through political negotiations and India is ready to contribute to this. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi also expressed serious concern over the safety of the nuclear project in Ukraine.

The President of Ukraine reacted to the proposal given by the Prime Minister of India and thanked the Prime Minister of India. After this, Foreign Minister Jaishankar, while speaking in New Zealand, has given proof of India’s efforts to stop the conflict in Ukraine and reduce its intensity. The Ambassador of France in India also informed that his country is in touch with India regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Also, the French Ambassador said that India could do a lot with French cooperation to prevent this war and reduce its intensity.

Meanwhile, leaders of other countries have hinted that India can stop the war in Ukraine by putting pressure on Russia, as India is among the few countries with influence over Russia. India is aware that this influence on Russia is sustained due to India’s nonalignment policy. Therefore, India is not ready to compromise this neutral policy and take a stand against Russia. However, Foreign Minister Jaishankar delivered a message that India will definitely discuss issues of international interest with Russia.
