317,000 cybercrimes reported in India over 18 months

New Delhi: There has been a massive increase in cybercrimes in India; more than 300,000 cybercrimes have been reported in the country over the last 18 months. The maximum number of cybercrimes were reported from Maharashtra. Karnataka is second on that list. Union Minster of State for Home, G Kishan Reddy, gave this information in the Lok Sabha.

317,000 cybercrimes reported in India over 18 monthsThe union government launched the ‘National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal’ in August 2019. This initiative was started to make a national system available to report cybercrimes. Since the portal’s launch, 313,439 cyber crimes have been reported on the portal. The maximum number of these are reported from Maharashtra. Maharashtra reported 50,806 cybercrimes. FIR has been registered in 534 of these crimes.

Following Maharashtra, Karnataka has reported 21,562 cybercrimes; out of these, FIR cases are registered in 87 crimes. Moreover, Minister Reddy informed that 5,771 FIRs have been registered in matters involving cybercrimes, in the country, over the last 18 months. The union government is in constant contact with the state governments and administrations of Union Territories regarding the increasing cybercrimes. Reddy clarified that the states are issued instructions from time to time. Action is being taken as per law against cybercrimes.

Six months ago, National Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval, expressed concerns over cybercrimes and cyberattacks. There is a huge increase in online transactions in view of the Coronavirus crisis. Cyber criminals are taking advantage of this scenario. Doval said that there has been an increase of 500% in cybercrimes, in the country. Cyberspace data is as valuable as gold. Furthermore, the theft of some information could spell a disaster. The NSA said, therefore, the citizens should be cautious while carrying out online transactions.
