Berlin: – Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Federal Minister of Defence of Germany, announced the formation of the independent German Space Command, saying the Space sector is a sensitive factor in the country’s infrastructure facilities and its security is important. Germany becomes the third European country to form an independent space command under the defence department. Even NATO announced that the Space sector would be included in ‘Article 5’ last month. As per Article 5, there is a provision that if any NATO member comes under attack, it will be retaliated against recognising it as an attack on NATO.
The German defence department justified the formation of the independent Space Command, saying that the threats in the space sector are consistently increasing. Therefore, its security has become of prime importance. German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer clarified the objective behind forming the Space Command’ German Prosperity and security are heavily dependent on the space sector. The civilian and military satellites are a major source for many German sectors. As these sources are sensitive, their security becomes a high priority.’ The Centre for Air operations at the Uedem city in Germany will operate as the headquarter for the Space Command.
The German defence department informed that the space command would pay attention to surveillance and security of the satellites and space debris. Currently, more than 30 German satellites are operating in space. More than 10 of these satellites are a part of the telecommunication department, and there are more than five military satellites. Germany is ranked third among European countries, having the highest number of satellites in space.
Since the last few years, the threat of a space conflict has increased, and warnings are consistently being issued that countries like Russia and China are preparing for a space war. These countries have developed missiles and other advanced technologies to target satellites in space and successfully tested them. The western countries are coming forward to counter this increasing Russian and Chinese threat in the space sector. The United States announced the formation of the Space Force in the last year.
In 2019, NATO announced space as the Fifth War Domain. After that, France was the first European country to form a Space Command. Whereas the United Kingdom announced the formation of the Space Command in April. After that, now, Germany becomes the third European country to form an independent Space Command.
