The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence organised the Global Emerging Technology Summit on Tuesday. Along with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, EU Vice President Margrethe Vestager, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore Vivian Balakrishnan attended the summit. Moreover, leaders, advisors and senior officials from countries like India, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Israel also attended the summit.

It is being observed that China has taken a significant lead in the technology sector in the last decade. The Chinese companies and research seem to be forging ahead in sectors from 5G technology to Artificial Intelligence. There have been many examples of China forcing the smaller and weaker countries to accept the Chinese technology using its financial might and influence. At the same time, indications have also been received that China, using its domination in the minerals and raw materials sector, is trying to hold the technological progress in other countries at ransom.

The leaders, officials and experts participating in the summit pointed to this Chinese threat. China has the ambition to lead Artificial Intelligence and other advanced technology sectors. China has increased its influence in the international agencies deciding the global criteria and regulations for these sectors. The attendees at the summit pointed to the threat created to human rights and global security because of the increasing Chinese influence and its ambitions. NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoana appealed that if this threat is to be neutralised, the countries respecting common values and ideologies should stop competing with each other and enter into partnerships.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned that there is the third wave of the digital revolution today, and care needs to be taken that the important and sensitive technologies are not used against the democratic countries. Senior US Senator Mark Warner presented a stand that the United States should form a multilateral front and prepare a framework and criteria for sectors related to advanced technology. Other countries from the European Union supported the stand adopted by Warner.
