Foreign interference in Cuba will not be tolerated, Russia warns US

Mosco/Havana/Washington – Russia is closely monitoring the developments in Cuba and the surrounding region. Russia has warned that interference of any foreign powers will not be tolerated in the internal matters of the sovereign country. Extensive protests were held in Cuba against the functioning of the Communist regime. The United States has supported the protests. Besides, Russia and some Latin American countries have expressed intense displeasure. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel accused that there is a US hand behind the protests in the country.

Thousands of Cuban citizens took to the streets to protest against the ruling communist regime. This is believed to be the first instance of such widespread protests against the ruling government in Cuba. The protestors claimed that the ruling communist government failed to provide the necessary facilities and amenities to the Cuban population. The citizens complained about a shortage of foodstuff, medicines and other life essentials because of the Coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, the protestors also accused that the communist regime has stripped the Cuban citizens of their freedom.

Severe repercussions of the extensive protests held in Cuba, including capital Havana, are being felt internationally. US President Joe Biden announced support for the protests in Cuba. President Biden clarified his stand that the Cuban population asks for freedom from a monopolistic regime. This kind of protest has never been seen in Cuba before. The United States is standing firm behind the Cuban people. The Cuban government should not use violence to suppress the voices of the Cuban population.’

Along with President Biden, many other senior US leaders declared support to the Cuban protests. These include the speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Nancy Pelosi and senior Republican leaders Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio. It has been revealed that the Cuban population from the United States also held protests marches supporting the Cuban protests. The group of Cuban citizens from the state of Miami have made an insistent demand that President Biden should intervene and overthrow the Cuban government.

A strong reaction has been received from Russia over the Cuban agitation. Russian foreign ministry has warned the United States that foreign interference in Cuba will not be tolerated. Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned ‘No disruptive activities destabilising Cuba will be tolerated. We are sure that the ruling government in Cuba will take the necessary decisions to establish peace in the country.’ Latin American countries Mexico, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia, have supported the Russian stand.

After the revolution led by Fidel Castro, a communist regime was established in Cuba. The United States made many attempts to overthrow the Fidel Castro government. But the United States failed in its attempts. The United States also imposed large scale economic sanctions against Cuba. In 2015, the then US President Barack Obama had decided to relax the sanctions against Cuba to a certain extent. But during the tenure of President Donald Trump, Cuba was included in the list of countries supporting terrorism and sanctions were imposed. Former US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, had warned that the United States would assist in overthrowing the monopolistic regimes in Cuba and Nicaragua in a statement made two years ago.
