On Friday, Oxfam International presented the report named ‘The Hunger Virus Multiplies’. The report claims that more than 150 million people are faced with the problem of food shortage and starvation. Abby Maxman, a senior official at Oxfam, said, ‘The figures in the report are scary. But it cannot be forgotten that the statistic has been created with every person facing extreme troubles.’

It has been revealed that two-thirds of the people facing starvation and food shortage face this because of the increasing intensity of the conflicts in their countries. These include 100 million people from 23 countries. Maxman also pointed out ‘Food shortage is being used as a weapon in the conflicts. Various groups are competing with each other to tackle the problem of shortage of food grain and starvation.’

The Oxfam international noted that more than 500,000 people have been added to the list from four countries in the African continent over the last six months. These include Yemen, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Madagascar. The report points out that the Coronavirus pandemic and its serious effects on the economy have increased the severity of the starvation problem in Venezuela, Afghanistan and DR Congo.

The Oxfam International report also claims that global warming and its economic effects have increased 40% in the costs of essential commodities, pushing many people into the crisis of starvation.
