Chabahar, Afghanistan discussed during Indian Foreign Minister’s visit to Iran  

Tehran: Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited Iran before proceeding for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Russia. At this time, the Indian Foreign Minister met his Iranian counterpart and discussed the Chabahar port and Afghanistan issues. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited Iran just two days after the visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

In the next few hours, a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the SCO member countries will start in the Russian capital of Moscow. The Indian Foreign Minister announced that he took a technical halt in Iran before proceeding for the meeting. At this time, Foreign Minister Jaishankar, along with his delegation, met the Iranian Foreign Minister and discussed cooperation between India and Iran. Jaishankar announced that discussions regarding strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional cooperation also were held during the meeting. Jaishankar announced that the meeting was fruitful. At the same time, Jaishankar thanked Iran for the reception given to him. The foreign ministry clarified that discussions were held regarding the joint project of Chabahar port and the developments in Afghanistan during the meeting.  

After only a few hours in Iran, Jaishankar left for Russia. India is participating as a member of the SCO meeting, and Iran will be attending as an observer. The Indian and Iranian leaders are expected to meet even during this meeting. But the special significance is being attached to Foreign Minister Jaishankar’s visit to Iran just before that. Two days ago, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh landed in Iran and held discussions with Defence Minister Brigadier Amir Hatami before proceeding to a visit to Russia. It was announced that regional security issues were discussed during the hour-long meeting.   

A few years ago, Iran signed the agreement for the Chabahar port with India. This cooperation, connecting India to Afghanistan, is said to be military cooperation. At the beginning of this year, India announced Rs 1 billion for the Chabahar port.
