Last month, the Hong Kong administration closed its representative office in Taiwan. At that time, the accusation had been levelled that Taiwan is interfering in Hong Kong’s internal matters, which resulted in spoiling the relations. The Taiwan government had supported the pro-democracy protests being held in Hong Kong. The Taiwan government also announced that the citizens of Hong Kong who fled after the imposition of the new security law, by the Chinese communist regime, in Hong Kong would be accepted by Taiwan. Infuriated by this, China closed the Hong Kong office in Taiwan.

Taiwan expressed regret over the decision taken by the Macau administration. The office had been started under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Taiwan and the Macau administration in 2011. But Taiwan said that the decision to close the office was taken unilaterally by the Macau administration. At the same time, the Taiwan government clarified that the Taiwanese office would continue to operate in Macau.

The severing relations of Hong Kong and Macau with Taiwan, with the closure of their offices in Taiwan, are considered part of the Chinese actions against Taiwan. Since the last few years, China has started exerting pressure on Taiwan in all possible ways, and threats of military option also are being issued.

Like Hong Kong, the Macau city also is known as the Special Administrative Region of China. Macau, known for entertainment, malls and skyscrapers, was a part of Portugal till 1999. After that, the Chinese government took over and awarded it autonomous status. But the agreement for Macau does not state One Country, Two Systems, like Hong Kong. Therefore, Macau is under the complete control of the Chinese government.
