Hong Kong can never succeed under Chinese control: US President Donald Trump

Washington: – US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning, ‘In the past, Hong Kong administration was handled by clever and intelligent people. But now, Hong Kong can never succeed under the control of the Chinese government. The Hong Kong market and the stock market will soon hit rock bottom, and no country in the world will deal with Hong Kong.’ At this time, President Trump criticised that the action taken by the Chinese agencies against Jimmy Lai, the chief of Apple Daily, was horrible.

Only last week, the United States announced the imposition of sanctions against 11 entities, including Hong Kong administrator Carrie Lam. Thereafter, the Trump administration took the decision that it will be mandatory for all products exported from Hong Kong, to have the ‘Made in China’ label. Trump has already approved bills to cancel the special status awarded to Hong Kong and to impose sanctions against Chinese officials and leaders. Now, by issuing a direct warning regarding the future of Hong Kong, President Trump has clearly indicated that the US stand, regarding Hong Kong, will continue to be aggressive.

The United States had given a lot of concessions and had maintained relations, with the intention that Hong Kong will continue to remain independent. But after the impetuous Chinese takeover, the United States was forced to reverse all the concessions, including the special status awarded to Hong Kong. The US President claimed that due to this, Hong Kong will lose its capabilities as one of the leading financial centres, along with London and New York, and will fail. At this time, Trump expressed displeasure over the action taken by the Chinese agencies against Jimmy Lai, the chief of Apple Daily. Trump said that he is dissatisfied with the developments in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Lai, the chief of Apple Daily, who was released on bail, following the Chinese action, fired salvos of criticism at the Chinese government. Lai warned that if everyone does not unite and change the behaviour of the Chinese government, there cannot be peace in the world at any time. At the same time, he also appealed to the people of Hong Kong that they should not take to extremism as they have to fight a long-drawn battle. Lai made these statements during the live streaming sessions organised by the US thinktank Heritage Foundation. Lai thanked the United States for the support and claimed that there is a need for the same kind of assistance in the future.
