Afghanistan demands urgent UN meeting during talks with the Indian Foreign Minister

New Delhi/Kabul: – After the Taliban blew up the home of Afghanistan’s Defence Minister, the Afghan Foreign Minister spoke to the Indian Foreign Minister over the phone. Afghan Foreign Minister Atmar demanded that an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Afghanistan should be urgently called, given the growing Taliban violence. India had expressed concerns over the situation in Afghanistan, saying it has a direct impact on Indian security. There are indications that the Security Council will soon discuss Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Atmar himself shared the discussion with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar on social media. Atmar said, ‘I made the Indian Foreign Minister aware of the dire situation in Afghanistan created due to the Taliban’s violence.’ He called on the United Nations and the international community to play a more critical role in curbing Taliban violence.

The Afghan Foreign Minister briefed the ambassadors of the other countries regarding the Taliban violence. Along with the Taliban, Pakistan-sponsored militant groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed are also active in Afghanistan, Atmar said in talks with other countries. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not officially announced the discussions held between Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar and Afghan Foreign Minister Atmar. But with the presidency of the Security Council coming its way, there are indications that India may be able to convene an emergency meeting on the issue of Afghanistan.

Earlier in the day, India‘s ambassador to the United Nations Tirumurti expressed grave concerns over the violence in Afghanistan. Ambassador Tirumurti had said that the developments in Afghanistan could have a direct impact on India’s security. Foreign Minister Jaishankar also raised the issue of violence by the Taliban and foreign terrorist groups in Afghanistan. The Security Council and the international community will have to take a serious note of the bombing at the home of the Afghan Defence Minister. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, showing that the Taliban did not want to resolve the Afghan problem.

In such a scenario, the Security Council’s discussion on Afghanistan will be crucial. The issue of illegal aid to the Taliban from Pakistan will also come on the anvil. Also, this could make the world more aware that Pakistani soldiers and officers are fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan. This will provide another opportunity for India and Afghanistan to prove that Pakistan is supporting the Taliban, using terrorist organisations like Lashkar and Jaish. Therefore, if the Security Council convenes a meeting on Afghanistan, it will have far-reaching consequences.
