British navy counters supersonic missile with AI

London: – The British navy successfully outmanoeuvred a supersonic missile, travelling at 2 Mach speed, using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The British navy announced that this test was conducted during the NATO war exercises. The British navy has demonstrated that AI can stop the attacks of supersonic missiles and is ready with the solution.

War exercises ‘Formidable Shield 2021’ are being held in the marine region of Scotland and Norway. Warships and destroyers from NATO countries participate in these exercises, lasting for two weeks, and live firing is practised. Destroyers HMS Dragon, HMS Lancaster and HMS Argyll, from the British navy, participate in the exercises. AI was tested from HMS Dragon and HMS Lancaster.

The applications, Startle and Sycoiea, developed by the British defence department and the associated companies, were used for this purpose. Startle provides real-time information and alerts regarding the air defence system to the operations command on the warship. Whereas, Sycoiea gives information to choose the missile that can be used against the incoming supersonic missile. The British navy informed that the systems work faster and more efficiently than an experienced operator on the warship.

The officers on the destroyers were impressed by the performance of the systems. As per the British naval officials, AI has made it easier to trace and act against the supersonic missiles of the enemy. The British navy had tested AI even in the past. But this is the first time AI has been used to destroy a supersonic missile during a live firing war exercise.

In the meantime, Russian government media are claiming that the ‘Formidable Shield 2021’ war exercises pose a challenge to Russian security. Furthermore, the Russian media accused that these exercises are only an exhibition of strength by the NATO countries. A few days ago, Russia announced the development of AI-based marine drones, tanks, and military vehicles. Russia had indicated deploying these tanks and military vehicles on the border. In this scenario, by destroying a supersonic missile with AI, the United Kingdom has demonstrated that it is ready in the Artificial Intelligence sector.
