Washington: The Biden administration has suggested that Turkey supply the S-400 system to Ukraine to stop Russian airstrikes. An international news agency exposed this quoting three sources in Turkey. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman had raised this issue during her Turkey visit. Turkey has refused comment on the published report.
Last month, Wendy Sherman paid a special visit to Turkey. During the visit, the US Deputy Secretary of State met the senior officials in the Turkish foreign department. During this discussion, Sherman presented the proposal that Turkey should provide military assistance to Ukraine. Sherman suggested that Turkey supply the S-400 system in its possession to Ukraine in the event of further Russian airstrikes.
The US military analysts also are suggesting the same thing to Turkey. In 2019 Turkey purchased the S-400 air defence system from Russia ignoring the resentment of the United States and NATO. Turkey even turned its back on the US deal for super-advanced f-35 fighter jets. The US analysts suggest that if Turkey wants these fighter jets, Turkey should supply the S-400 to Ukraine.
The Biden administration suggests that the countries purchasing weapons from Russia should supply them to Ukraine. The Biden administration believes the S-300 and S-400 air defence systems will benefit the Ukrainian military in the war against Russia. Accordingly, Poland had announced the supply of Mig fighter jets from its fleet to Ukraine. But Poland had demanded that the United States supply super-advanced F-35 fighter jets to Poland. The Biden administration dismissed the Polish demand.
Meanwhile, this information was published by the international news agency quoting sources. The news agency did not clarify the Turkish response. It becomes binding on Turkey to accept the US suggestion as a NATO member. But the news agency has pointed out that if Turkey supplied the S-400 or any other military assistance to Ukraine, it would directly impact Russia-Turkey relations.
