Jaishankar-PayneOn Friday, a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the QUAD countries was held in Melbourne, Australia. The issue of Chinese hegemony was the central issue even during the bilateral talks between the Indian and Australian Foreign Ministers. The statements of Jaishankar reflect that. On Saturday, a meeting was held between Foreign Minister Jaishankar and Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne. A question was posed regarding China to the Indian Minister of External Affairs during the press conference held after the meeting.

Moreover, discussions about India-China relations were held during the QUAD meeting. The Chinese activities in the Indo-Pacific sector were also discussed, as the countries in the region must be alert about them. India and China had signed a written agreement regarding the deployment of military units along the LAC. China violated the deal in 2020, and tension was created on the LAC. Foreign Minister Jaishankar criticised China saying that when such a big country ignores the written text of the deal, it becomes an important issue and a cause for concern for the international community.

At this time, Indian MEA Jaishankar even attacked the Chinese criticism against QUAD. ‘China has been expressing displeasure regarding QUAD for the last so many days. QUAD is not against anyone. It would increase the confidence that the sovereignty and security of all countries in the Indo-Pacific region are secured against any threats. S Jaishankar retorted that the importance of QUAD does not reduce because of Chinese criticism.

Meanwhile, discussions were held on cyber cooperation during the bilateral meeting between the Indian and Australian Foreign Ministers. Also, Australia has announced new programs to increase cooperation in the educational and cultural sectors.
